Going electric is a scary thought for many, so we're here to help you calm those nerves and show you why going electric really is the future!
There are lots of things that you as a customer may be concerned about. These may include: "The driving range isn't good enough, the cost is too high, or the charging infrastructure isn't available". Here at W R Davies, we want to assure you that these aren't problems that should stand in your way of going electric.
Are they good for the environment?
50% of our energy in the UK comes from renewable sources. 39.4% of electricity to the UK National grid came from wind farms and 36.2% came from fossil fuels*. With this trend continuing on an annual basis, we can only expect the renewable sources contribution to be higher year on year. When you buy an EV you will be writing off its carbon debt after 11,000 miles on the road. So even with the effects of manufacturing the vehicle, the carbon footprint is written off on average in a year, whilst a typical ICE vehicle will continue contributing to its carbon footprint throughout its life.
Is there enough range?
Range anxiety is the worry your electric car will run out of power before you reach your destination. Modern electric cars have a range of around 200 miles**, and the average driver travels around 20 miles a day meaning you will have more than enough range for every day. If you want to do a longer road trip, stopping to charge for 10 - 40 minutes to top up your battery is the perfect excuse to have a coffee break, stretch your legs and go to the loo.
On top of that the worry of that if the weather get cold you'll lose a lot of range, isn't always true all cars struggle in the cold therefore leading to worse MPG etc. No matter what it'll always cost more to run in the winter months but those who on electric vehicles won't be any worse of then those who own ICE.
How am I going to charge it when there is limited charging infrastructure?
We find this is a main concern for many. Many customers are worried about not making it to the next charging point in their journey to charge. There are over 8,000 Fuel stations around the country and generally this results in fairly short waits to fuel up. However, we frequently hear concern over the amount of charging points available to customers. There are now around 68,273 charging points around the country meaning you are never too far away from somewhere you can charge your electric vehicle. Many of these charging stations have lightning charging meaning you can charge your car in as little as 10 minutes.
Using apps like ZapMap helps you locate charging points quickly and efficiently. ZapMap also includes information about which charging options are available, how busy the charging point is and directs you right to the charging station.
Driveway charging is the easiest solution to charging your electric vehicle. Companies like Octopus provide an affordable method to charge from your home, meaning you can pop it on charge overnight and wake up with an electric vehicle ready to go. This means you can always be charged and ready to hit the road. Depending on the electric vehicle you choose, there may also be government grant support available to help you with installation costs.
Are they boring?
Electric vehicles may lack the dramatic soundtrack of a roaring V8 engine, but they’re far from boring.
Even the best internal combustion engines have to spin at a few thousand RPM before they give their best, but an electric car? It’s all there from the moment you touch the accelerator. That level of performance is available in even the most modest electric vehicles, which means electric cars are a whole new breed of beast.
Are the savings really that big?
Yes ... the savings over fuel costs can be massive. With varying electricity costs and fuel prices, the easiest way to see how much electric driving could save you is to use the ZapMap Journey calculator and tailor it to your driving requirements.
Buying an EV is more accessible than ever with prices coming down every year as more electric vehicles join the market. With new EVs starting from £14,345, there has never been a better time to explore electric driving.
Why not just wait for the next innovation?
Electric vehicles are the innovation you've been waiting for. The UK government has been investing in this way of motoring for a reason and there isn't a single manufacturer that isn't an advocate of electric vehicles.
Hydrogen cars make up 0.002% of cars worldwide, making it extremely unlikely that we will see huge numbers of these on the roads in future.
Don't they set on fire?
No ... out of the 100,000 car fires that happened in 2023, only 23 of them were EVs. That's a tiny number! More components of ICE vehicles are flammable than those of an EV.
