Maybe we’re crazy, but W R Davies is proud to announce that we’ll be taking part in the Coracle World Championships again this September!
Our teams are getting ready to dive into a day of racing, swapping four wheels for one very wobbly little boat to paddle, splash and, if previous years are anything to go by, get absolutely soaked!
Taking place right here in Shrewsbury at Pengwern Boat Club on the River Severn, the Coracle World Championships are exactly as brilliant and bonkers as they sound.
Up to 48 teams of four go head-to-head, relay racing across the river in coracles – traditional, single-person circular boats that are steered and paddled using just one oar.
Sounds easy, right?
Wrong.
Coracles are notoriously tricky to steer, which means what starts as a serious attempt at competitive racing can very quickly turn into a battle of wills between the paddler, the paddle, the boat… and the River Severn.
There will be plenty of paddling, plenty of cheering and, inevitably, plenty of splashing. And yes, there’s a very real chance that some of our team members will spend more time in the river than they do in their coracle!
Of course, the best thing about the Coracle World Championships isn’t just the racing, the rivalry or the questionable boat-handling skills, but the fact it's all to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, helping them provide vital support to people living with cancer and their families.

So, while we’ll be battling it out on the water, we’ll also be doing our bit to raise money for an organisation that makes such an incredible difference to so many people.
