From Coast to Coast: James Tackles Hadrian’s Wall

When it comes to embracing a challenge, James from the W R Davies team didn't hesitate. Swapping his everyday routine for hiking boots and the open air, he set out to conquer one of the UK's most iconic routes—Hadrian’s Wall.

Spanning 73 miles from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway, the trail offered more than just physical exertion. It unfolded Roman ruins, dramatic weather, and unforgettable landscapes, making every step an experience in itself.

So what sparked the decision?
“It was something me and a friend always talked about,” James said. “We’d done lots of scenic Sunday walks around Haughmond Hill and The Wrekin, and often discussed doing something more challenging. Then when he mentioned someone from work was planning it, I decided to be brave and join in. Plus, I grew up loving The Lord of the Rings—and all they do is take scenic walks.”

James’s journey became about much more than just distance. From peaceful hilltops to spontaneous chats with fellow hikers, the walk revealed moments that left lasting impressions.
“One standout was on day two when I saw my first piece of the Wall. You get a sense of its scale, and when you see those longer stretches snaking over the hills, it just becomes more and more impressive. It was also great to develop a sense of community—passing walkers, meeting them again at stops or accommodations. You’re all on the same journey.”

Beyond history and physical effort, the walk brought its share of surprises—wildlife, scenery, and rare moments of stillness.
“The views during the middle two days were extraordinary,” James recalled. “Long stretches of wall with countryside that rolled on for miles. One night, I watched the sun set from my tent—it was incredibly peaceful, especially with the sheep we were sharing the field with.”

Now that the final step’s behind him, the question is: what’s next?
“I’ve definitely got the taste for another adventure,” said James. “There are so many brilliant trails in the UK—I just can’t decide which one to take on next.”
