A Telford Lawn Bowls Club recently teamed up with W R Davies Toyota offering employees a chance to try their hand at the sport of Crown Green Bowls.
Intended as a team building exercise, the brainchild of Service Adviser, Carleen Doody-Millington also served as a morale boost with many of the 15 company participants giving a thumbs up to the event.
As with W R Davies Toyota, the bowls club has recently celebrated its 100th year and was confident the employees would enjoy the best experience of playing the sport. Last year they received an award for Best Green in Shropshire from Professional golf & bowls lawnmower specialists and manufacturer, Dennis Mowers.
As a playing member of Trench Bowling Club herself, Carleen was able to recruit fellow experienced bowlers eager to impart some of their knowledge of the game and coach the W R Davies team.
The pairings were split into groups and games were played in a “round robin” format that would see each pairing play all other pairings in the group.
With only a short break for a bite to eat from the buffet, the group stages were played from the late afternoon through to the evening where the competitive nature of some of the players became apparent with plenty of banter and laughs along the way.
The positions within the group were determined by the points scored with the pairing achieving the highest number of points progressing forward into the semi-finals.
With the clock ticking past 10 pm, the semi-finals began with Hayley Irwin & Paul Palin edging past Vicki Brunt & Peter Millington meanwhile Will Price & Loretta Thompson were comprehensively seeing off Andy Morgan & Carleen Doody-Millington.
The final saw Hayley Irwin & Paul Palin establish a lead over Will Price & Loretta Thompson that became too big for them to close before the end of the game.
At just before 11 pm, event organiser, Carleen, gave thanks to the members of Trench BC and her fellow W R Davies employees for contributing to a very successful and enjoyable day before giving her congratulations to the winners Hayley Irwin & Paul Palin.
